Guide for families and partners

# Assisted living and shared housing are not the same.

Both can be the right answer for someone. Knowing the difference helps you choose the one that fits.

When a parent, relative, or someone you support needs a new place to live, two options often come up: assisted living and shared housing. They can sound similar. They are very different, and the difference matters for the person's daily life.

This guide explains each in plain terms, describes what The Argo House does and does not provide, and suggests questions to ask before you decide. It is general information. It is not medical or legal advice. For decisions about care needs, talk with the person's doctor, case manager, or discharge planner.

## What Assisted Living Generally Means

Assisted living is generally a licensed care setting that helps residents with daily activities. Depending on the setting, that can include help with bathing, dressing, medication, and meals, along with some level of oversight. Because it provides care, it is usually regulated by the state as a care setting.

Assisted living makes sense when a person needs regular hands-on help to get through the day safely.

## What Supportive Shared Housing Means

Supportive shared housing is a home. You rent a room or a bed, and you share the kitchen, bathrooms, laundry, and common spaces with other adults. Residents manage their own days, their own appointments, and their own lives.

At The Argo House, supportive means a furnished home, one clear monthly rate with the essentials included, a house manager you can call, and a straightforward process. The house is permitted through the Dallas Boarding House Department. Our housing terms guide (https://argohousedallas.com/resources/housing-terms-explained) explains these terms in more detail.

## What The Argo House Provides

The Argo House provides housing. The rate is $750 per month per bed in a shared room. It includes all utilities, a furnished room, WiFi, washer and dryer use, kitchen access, cable and streaming, and house supplies. A $250 community fee is due at move-in.

The home is in Northeast Dallas, near Lakewood and White Rock Lake. The kitchen, bathrooms, and two rooms have been remodeled. The area is walkable, and public transportation is nearby.

## What The Argo House Does Not Provide

The Argo House does not provide personal care, medication help, supervision, or meals. There is no staff member helping residents with daily activities. It is not assisted living, not treatment, and not a licensed care facility.

Being clear about this protects everyone. Knowing what the house does and does not provide helps everyone plan well.

- No personal care
- No medication help
- No supervision
- No meals provided

## Why Any Care Should Be Planned Separately

Some people use outside services, such as a home health visit or help from family. If someone you support would need any care while living in shared housing, plan it separately, before the move, with the professionals involved.

Talk openly about care needs with the person's case manager or discharge planner. The hospital discharge planning (https://argohousedallas.com/hospital-discharge-planning) page explains what information is helpful to share.

## Questions Families Can Ask

Use these questions with the person you are helping, and with the professionals involved. There are no wrong answers.

- What support, if any, does the person want at home, and who will arrange it?
- Which services are already in place, and will they continue after a move?
- How will they get to appointments?
- How will the monthly payment be handled?
- What does the person want for their own living situation?

## Questions to Ask Any Shared House

If you are considering shared housing, compare houses carefully. Ask about the permit, the total monthly cost, fees, what is included, the room setup, and the house expectations. Our checklist of questions to ask before moving in (https://argohousedallas.com/resources/questions-to-ask-before-moving-in) covers each topic.

## Keep the Person at the Center

Whatever you decide, the person who will live in the home should be part of every step. Read the options together, visit together, and let them ask their own questions. At The Argo House, the intake conversation is with the prospective resident, and eligibility is confirmed during a short intake call.

The older adults (https://argohousedallas.com/seniors) page has more for older adults considering shared housing. To ask a question, call (469) 503-6007. Joyce, our house manager, answers the phone.

## Planning Support Around a Move

If the person wants any outside services at home, arrange them before the move. Talk with the person's doctor, case manager, or discharge planner about what they want in place, who will provide it, and how it will continue once they have a new address.

Write down the names and phone numbers of anyone providing support, and share the new address with them once it is confirmed. The person who will live in the home should lead these conversations and decide what support they want. At The Argo House, eligibility is confirmed during a short intake call, and the same process applies to everyone.

Planning ahead this way means the move itself can focus on settling in, with every outside service already lined up.

Keep a simple written list of each service, the contact person, and the date it starts at the new address. Share it with the person, and with family if the person wants them involved. If a service will change after the move, confirm the new arrangement before moving day rather than after.

Update each provider with the new address once it is confirmed, so appointments and paperwork follow the person to their new home.
