Checklist for residents, families, and partners

# Who to tell when your address changes.

A move is not finished until your mail, your money, and your records follow you. Here is a practical order to work through.

When you move, the boxes are the visible part. The quieter part is updating every office, company, and person that sends you mail or keeps your address on file. Miss one, and a benefit letter, a bank card, or a prescription notice can end up at an address you no longer use.

This checklist walks through the most common places to update, in an order that tends to work well. It also suggests a simple way to keep track of what you have done. Every agency sets its own process, so use each one's official website or office for the current steps. This guide is general information.

If you are moving into a shared home such as The Argo House, the house address is shared with you as part of arranging your tour and move-in. Start this list as soon as you have your move-in date. You can review the move-in steps (https://argohousedallas.com/move-in) to see where that date falls.

## Start With a Simple Record

Before you contact anyone, set up one place to track your progress. A single sheet of paper or a note on your phone works fine. Make four columns: who you contacted, the date, how you did it, and any confirmation number or name.

This record matters more than it seems. If a letter goes astray later, you will know exactly when you made the change and who confirmed it. Keep the record with your important documents until every item is checked off and your mail is arriving correctly.

## 1. USPS Change of Address and Mail Forwarding

Start with the Postal Service. A change of address request tells USPS to forward mail from your old address to your new one for a period of time. It catches the mail you forget about while you update everyone else.

You can make the request online through the official USPS website or in person at a post office. Use only the official USPS site. Look-alike websites sometimes charge extra for the same request.

## 2. Social Security

If you receive Social Security or SSI, update your address with the Social Security Administration directly. Mail forwarding is not a substitute. Use the official Social Security website, call the agency, or visit a local office.

If you have questions about how a move affects your payments, ask Social Security or your case manager. This guide does not cover benefit rules.

## 3. The VA, for Veterans

Veterans should update their address with the VA so that letters, appointment notices, and any payments reach them. The official VA website explains the current ways to do this. If you work with a VA social worker, let them know too.

The veterans (https://argohousedallas.com/veterans) page has more about The Argo House, which is veteran-owned.

## 4. Banks and Cards

Update your address with every bank, credit union, and card company you use. Replacement cards and statements are sent to the address on file, so this step protects your money.

Most banks let you change your address online or in a branch. Add each one to your record as you go.

## 5. Employer and Payroll

If you work, give your employer your new address. Payroll uses it for tax forms, and a wrong address can delay a form you need at tax time. Ask whoever handles payroll or human resources how they prefer to receive the update.

## 6. Pharmacy and Doctors' Offices

Update your address with your pharmacy and with each doctor's office you visit. They use it for billing, insurance, and reminders. If you are moving to a new part of town, this is also a good time to ask whether a different pharmacy location would be easier to reach.

If you rely on public transportation, our guide to getting around without a car (https://argohousedallas.com/resources/getting-around-without-a-car) can help you plan those trips.

## 7. Phone Carrier

Your phone carrier needs your current address for billing and account security. Update it through your account online, in the carrier's app, or at a store.

## 8. Texas Driver License or ID Card

Texas requires you to keep the address on your driver license or ID card current. The Texas Department of Public Safety handles these changes. Visit the official Texas DPS website for the current ways to update your address, including whether you can do it online.

## 9. Voter Registration

If you are registered to vote, update your registration so you receive the right ballot and polling information. The official Texas voter registration website and your county elections office explain how.

## 10. Case Manager or Representative Payee

If you work with a case manager, a representative payee, or anyone else who manages paperwork on your behalf, tell them your new address as soon as you know it. They may need to update other records for you. Share your record sheet with them so nothing is done twice or missed.

## Others to Consider

Once the essentials are done, think about everyone else who writes to you. Keep adding them to your record.

- Health insurance
- Family members and friends
- Subscriptions and memberships
- Any court, school, or agency you correspond with
- Online shopping accounts
- Your emergency contacts

## Check Your Mail for a Few Weeks

Watch each piece of forwarded mail that arrives. The forwarding label shows who still has your old address. Update each one and add it to your record. When forwarded mail stops arriving, your list is complete.

If you are planning a move to The Argo House, call (469) 503-6007 to confirm current availability. Joyce, our house manager, answers the phone. The contact page (https://argohousedallas.com/contact) has email details too.
