Guide for veterans and the professionals who help them

# Settling into Dallas as a veteran.

A new city means a new set of logistics. Here is a practical checklist to work through.

Moving to a new city as a veteran comes with the usual moving tasks plus a few specific ones. Your VA records need your new address. You need to know where to go for appointments. And you need a steady place to live while you learn the area.

This guide is a practical checklist for veterans settling into Dallas. It covers updating your address with the VA, finding your nearest VA location, updating other benefit addresses, planning transit to appointments, and setting a budget. It does not describe VA benefits, services, or eligibility. For those questions, the VA and your VA social worker are the right sources.

The Argo House is veteran-owned. Zandria, the owner, is a veteran, and veterans are warmly welcome. The house is not veterans-only. Everyone is welcome. You can read more on the veterans page (https://argohousedallas.com/veterans).

## 1. Update Your Address With the VA

Start here. Letters, appointment notices, and any payments from the VA go to the address the VA has on file. Mail forwarding helps, but it is not a substitute for updating the VA directly.

Use the official VA website, VA.gov, to find the current ways to update your contact information. Use only the official site. If you are not sure how, call the VA or ask your VA social worker to walk you through it.

Write down the date you made the change and any confirmation you receive. Keep it with your important documents.

## 2. Find Your Nearest VA Location

The VA's official locator tool on VA.gov lets you search for VA locations near your new address. Look up where you would go for regular appointments and note the address and phone number.

If you are transferring care from another city, ask the VA how to make that transition and what you need to do on each end. Your current VA team may be able to help before you move.

## 3. Talk With a VA Social Worker

VA social workers can help you understand what services and options may be available to you in a new area. Ask them directly. This guide makes no claims about any VA offering or who qualifies, because those answers depend on your situation and the VA's current rules.

If a VA social worker is helping you find housing, they are welcome to contact The Argo House. The VA social workers page (https://argohousedallas.com/va-social-workers) is written for them, and the referral call checklist (https://argohousedallas.com/resources/referral-call-checklist) covers what to have ready.

## 4. Update Your Other Benefit and Account Addresses

After the VA, update your address with any other office that sends you benefits or important mail. That may include Social Security, your bank, your employer, your pharmacy, and your phone carrier. File a USPS change of address as well to catch anything you miss.

If you have a driver license or ID card, look up the current Texas DPS steps on the official DPS website. You may also want to update your voter registration. The change of address checklist (https://argohousedallas.com/resources/change-of-address-checklist) gives a practical order for all of this.

## 5. Plan Transit to Appointments

Knowing where your VA location is only helps if you can get there. The Argo House is in a walkable area with public transportation nearby, but your trip depends on where your appointments are and when.

Use the official DART trip planner or a map app to plan your route. Check it at the actual time of day you would travel, and try the trip once before an important appointment. Ask the VA whether any transportation help applies to your situation. The getting around without a car guide (https://argohousedallas.com/resources/getting-around-without-a-car) covers planning trips around transit.

## 6. Set a Budget

A move costs money, and the first month in a new city often has surprises. Write down your monthly income and your fixed costs, then plan around them.

At The Argo House, housing is one predictable number. The rate is $750 a month per bed in a shared room, and there is a $250 community fee at move-in. All utilities, a furnished room, WiFi, washer and dryer, kitchen access, cable and streaming, and house supplies are included. That leaves groceries, transit, your phone, and personal items as your main variable costs. The fixed income budgeting guide (https://argohousedallas.com/resources/budgeting-on-a-fixed-income) walks through a monthly plan.

## 7. Get to Know the Area

The house is in Northeast Dallas, near Lakewood and White Rock Lake. Once your paperwork is under way, take time to learn your surroundings. Walk the blocks near the house, find your grocery store and pharmacy, and learn the route to the lake.

The Northeast Dallas page (https://argohousedallas.com/northeast-dallas) and the neighborhood hub (https://argohousedallas.com/neighborhood) have more about the area.

## 8. Keep Your Records Organized

A move is a good time to organize your paperwork. Keep your DD-214 or other service records, your ID, benefit letters, and medical appointment information together in one folder. Take photos of key documents and store them somewhere secure you can reach from any phone.

Add a simple log of every address update you make, with the date and any confirmation number. If a letter goes astray later, you will know exactly when each office was told.

## A Veteran-Owned Home

The Argo House is permitted supportive shared housing, owned by Zandria, a veteran. It provides housing, not personal care, supervision, meals, or medical support. Veterans are warmly welcome, and so is everyone else.

Eligibility is confirmed during a short intake call. Joyce, the house manager, answers the phone at (469) 503-6007, and you can email property.care.solutions.tx@gmail.com. Three beds are open now, and more beds can be added, so call to confirm what is available.
