Glossary for residents, families, and partners

Housing terms, in plain English.

Housing comes with its own vocabulary. These are short, general explanations of the words you are most likely to hear.

Looking for housing can feel like learning a new language. Terms that sound similar can mean very different things, and the difference matters when you are deciding where to live or where to refer someone.

This glossary explains common terms in general, everyday language. It does not quote any ordinance or statute, and definitions can vary by city and state. When a precise legal meaning matters, check with the relevant office or a qualified advisor. Everything here is general information.

Where it helps, each entry notes how the term applies to The Argo House, which is permitted supportive shared housing in Northeast Dallas. It is not assisted living, not treatment, and not a licensed care facility.

Boarding House

A boarding house is a residential home where several unrelated adults rent rooms or beds and share common spaces such as the kitchen, bathrooms, and living areas. Many cities regulate boarding houses and require a permit to operate one.

The Argo House is a boarding house permitted through the Dallas Boarding House Department. You can read more on the Dallas boarding house page.

Rooming House

A rooming house is a closely related term. In everyday use, it usually describes a house where people rent individual rooms or beds and share the rest of the home. Some places use rooming house and boarding house interchangeably, while others draw a distinction in their local rules.

Permitted Boarding House

A permitted boarding house is one that holds the permit its city requires. A permit means the house is known to the city and operates under the city's requirements for that type of housing. When you compare shared houses, asking whether a house is permitted is a fair and important question.

Supportive Shared Housing

Supportive shared housing describes a shared home with a steady, respectful household setting. In the case of The Argo House, supportive means a furnished home, one clear monthly rate with essentials included, a house manager you can call, and a straightforward process.

It does not mean personal care, supervision, meals, or medical support. The house provides housing. Residents are adults living in a home and managing their own days.

Shared Room

A shared room is a bedroom used by more than one resident. Each resident rents a bed in the room rather than the whole room. At The Argo House, the rate of $750 per month is for a bed in a furnished shared room.

All-Inclusive Rent

All-inclusive rent means one monthly payment covers housing plus the household costs that would otherwise be billed separately. At The Argo House, the rate includes all utilities, a furnished room, WiFi, washer and dryer use, kitchen access, cable and streaming, and house supplies. The rent and what is included page lists each item.

Community Fee

A community fee is a one-time charge paid when you move into a shared home. It is different from monthly rent. At The Argo House, the community fee is $250, due at move-in.

Intake Call

An intake call is a short first conversation between a prospective resident and the house. It is a chance to ask and answer questions and to talk through whether the house fits. At The Argo House, eligibility is confirmed during a short intake call.

Background Check

A background check is a standard screening step many housing providers use. At The Argo House, it takes place alongside the intake conversation, early in the process.

Reference Call

A reference call is a conversation with someone who can speak to the prospective resident, such as a past landlord, an employer, or a case manager. It is one of the steps before move-in at The Argo House.

Walkthrough

A walkthrough is a guided look at a home before you commit. It can be a video, a set of photos, or an in-person visit. The Argo House offers a video or photo walkthrough, and an in-person tour on request. The house tour page has the video.

Placement Agency

A placement agency is an organization that helps people find housing and connects them with homes that have openings. Some agencies charge a placement fee. The terms The Argo House offers agencies are on the placement agencies page.

Transitional Housing

Transitional housing is a general term for housing meant to bridge a period of change, such as a move, a new job, or a return to the community. It often has a time limit and is sometimes connected to a specific organization.

The Argo House is not described as transitional housing. It is permitted supportive shared housing, a home where adults in transition are welcome alongside others.

Common Areas

Common areas are the parts of a shared home that every resident uses, such as the kitchen, living room, bathrooms, and laundry. Caring for them is a shared responsibility, and it is one of the main things that makes a shared house feel like a home rather than a set of rented beds.

House Manager

A house manager is the person you contact about the household. At The Argo House, Joyce is the house manager and answers the phone at (469) 503-6007.

Assisted Living

Assisted living generally describes a residence that provides help with daily personal tasks, meals, and some level of oversight, and it is usually regulated as a care setting.

The Argo House is not assisted living. It does not provide personal care, supervision, meals, or medical support. If someone needs those services, it is best to discuss that openly with their case manager or discharge planner.
